Web Quest Lesson Plan

Introduction

In this unit, students explore the topic: Why do we read? In this lesson, students will learn about reading informational texts on the Internet. After studying two Web sites that discuss travel and tourist attractions in the United States , students will put together a travel itinerary for a European family who will soon be visiting this country.

Lesson Description

Students will read selected passages from Summer Vacation
<www.pbskids.org/wayback/summer/index.html> and 50 States <www.50states.com> and then will write a travel itinerary. The itinerary must include six destination descriptions, and should include at least one state from every region of the United States.

Instructional Objectives

  1. Students will use the Internet as a resource to get information.
  2. Students will identify ways that reading can apply to travel.
  3. Students will compare and contrast different locations in order to decide the most important places to visit when traveling to the United States.

Student Web Activity Sample Answer

Ellis Island
Location: New York
One place the family must be sure to see is the immigration museum on Ellis Island. From 1892 until 1954, thousands of immigrants came to America from Europe by way of Ellis Island. Because the immigrants came from so many different countries, Ellis Island was a common experience for vastly diverse groups of people.
