Web Quest Lesson Plan

Introduction

Students have explored the Big Idea of Courage and Cleverness. In this lesson, they will read about a real-life hero and about characteristics of superheroes. After reading these selections, students will write about someone whom they consider to be a hero and explain what characteristics this person has in common with the heroes described in the reading selections.

Lesson Description

Students will read selected passages from Rescue at Sea: A Sea Lab Scientist's Heroic Actions <http://tidings.disl.org/pastissues/vol12_2001/page4.5.htm> and Heroes of the New Millennium <http://www.drake.edu/journalism/CenturysEnd/heroes.html>. Then they will write about someone whom they consider to be a hero and explain what characteristics this person shares with the heroes described in the reading selections.

Instructional Objectives

  1. Students will use the Internet as a resource to get information.
  2. Students will read information about heroes.
  3. Students will write about someone whom they consider to be a hero and explain what characteristics this person shares with the heroes described in the reading selections.

Student Web Activity Sample Answer

I consider my cousin, a New York State police officer, to be a hero. My cousin is brave and is willing to take risks in order to save someone else. These are the characteristics that I think he shares with the heroes featured in the articles that I read.
