"Egypt"

Introduction
Students have read about ancient Egyptian civilization and the country's present population and culture. In this activity they will learn more about Egypt's varied historical, cultural, and recreational sites and activities. They will also learn about Egyptian customs and conduct.

Lesson Description
Students will visit the Tour Egypt Web site to learn about places and activities of interest to travelers. Students will answer four questions and then apply what they have learned to create a travel brochure.

Instructional Objectives

Students will be able to describe Egypt's historical, cultural, and recreational sites and activities.
Students will be able to explain Egyptian customs and conduct.
Students will be able to apply what they have learned to create a travel brochure about Egypt.

Applied Content Standards
Standard 1: The geographically informed person knows and understands how to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective.
Standard 2: The geographically informed person knows and understands how to use mental maps to organize information about people, places, and environments in a spatial context.
Standard 4: The geographically informed person knows and understands the physical and human characteristics of places.

Student Web Activity Answers

It is customary in Egypt to refuse the first invitation. If the offer is sincere and not just made out of politeness, it will probably be repeated, and then it can be accepted. You must keep a promise to visit an Egyptian home, because not doing so would humiliate the person inviting you.
Egypt's six major tourist sites offer beautiful beaches; urban areas with hotels, restaurants, and entertainment; monuments; and museums.
Cairo and Luxor and their surrounding areas include pyramids and other famous monuments, early Christian sites, and medieval Islamic sites.
Tutankhamun's tomb is probably the most famous tomb in the Valley of the Kings. It was built quickly because Tutankhamun died at age 19, so his tomb is not as elaborate as others.
Students' brochures will vary but should include information about the customs, historical sites, and cultural and recreational activities available in Egypt.
