Jack was beginning to regret becoming a cop. He became one because he grew up reading about the villains in Sherlock Holmes stories. And, just like Sherlock Holmes, Jack was an detective who dedicated himself to paying close attention to details. But Jack soon realized that the villain today was always some of a giant corporation. Nowadays, if you spoke out against evildoers you were labeled a/an and called anti-American, rather than being seen as a concerned citizen. He began to take a/an to fall asleep at night without thinking about how few wrongs he could actually right. "Besides," he often joked, "it would take a/an to figure out the trail of wrongdoing in some of these corporations, because nobody living is going to admit anything." But Jack's idealism became more as he grew older. And once Jack was transferred to a desk, his job was so that he started to gain weight. Eventually Jack felt he was like the thick at the bottom of a still, muddy pond. He knew he wasn't ever going to change the world for the better, although the desire to do so would probably bother him forever.
