About the Cover

The Texas Prairies and Lakes region offers a wide range of attractions. Among them is the State Fair of Texas. Located in Dallas, it boasts the 212-foot Texas Star-the tallest Ferris wheel in North America. As with all circles, the ratio of the circumference of the Texas Star to its diameter is a constant, π. You'll learn more about ratios in Chapter 7 and circumference in Chapter 10.

About the Graphics
Kaleidoscopic dodecagon. Created with Mathematica. A random collection of colored polygons in the plane is formed. A wedge of opening angle 2Pi/24 is cut out and a symmetric kaleidoscopic graphics is constructed by reflection and rotation of the polygons of the wedge. For more information, and for programs to construct such graphics, see: www.wolfram.com/r/textbook.
