Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

What Exactly Is a Hero?

The author of the essay contrasts being a hero with being a celebrity. “For a hero,” he says, “what counts is character. For a celebrity, what counts is fame.”

For this activity, write the names of three people. One of the people should be a hero; one should be a celebrity; and one should be someone who is both a hero and a celebrity. Beneath each name, write down the qualities that make that person a hero, a celebrity, or both. When you are finished, share your list with a friend.
