Big Idea Web Quest Lesson Plan

Introduction

Students have explored the Big Idea of Nature Inspires. In this lesson, they will read some selected poems with a nature theme. After reading these selections, students will write either a descriptive paragraph or a poem about something that they don't usually notice.

Lesson Description

Students will read selected poems from Science and Nature Poems http://www.firstscience.com/site/poems.asp and Earth Day interview with writers http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/entertainment/earth_day_4-22.html. Then they will write either a descriptive paragraph or a poem about something in nature that they don't usually notice.

1. Students will use the Internet as a resource to get information.
2. Students will read about nature poetry.
3. Students will write either a descriptive paragraph or a poem about something in nature that they don't usually notice.

I never really noticed the changes that happen before a big storm. The sky changes from bright and sunny to dark gray. Menacing clouds roll in and the sunlight disappears. It is most eerie when it gets as dark as night, even in the middle of the day. Then there are the first few drops of rain-little spatters from the clouds that you don't know whether or not to take seriously. The next stage is best observed when you are near a grove of trees. Off in the distance, you hear a rushing-the sound is like a tidal wave that is coming toward you or maybe a freight train traveling at top speed. You can hear the approach of the shower of rain blowing, and it gets louder until it is upon you, drenching your skin and soaking everything.
