Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant

Good writers often draw from their own life experiences or interests while writing. For example, in “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant,” W.D. Wetherell’s favorite hobby, fishing, plays an important part in the story. Wetherell’s enjoyment and knowledge of fishing is apparent in details throughout the story, such as the types of reel and rod the narrator chooses and his confusion at Sheila’s dislike for the sport. Freewrite for a few minutes about one of your favorite hobbies or activities. How did you become interested in it? What about it do you enjoy? What details and facts have you learned about this hobby?
