American History

Throughout “American History,” Cofer portrays Elena as a thoughtful observer of the people around her. Elena notes the routines, talents, and expressions of many others, including Mr. DePalma, the old couple across the way, and the men in the soda bar. Think of a time in the past month when you have been an observer—perhaps watching a sports game, walking down a busy street, or listening to friends talk at lunch. Write a paragraph in which you describe the people you observed as accurately as possible. Be sure to include details such as their mannerisms, clothing, and facial expressions.
