Shattered

The mood of an article or a story is the feeling that it evokes. In the magazine article “Shattered,” the writer describes a life-or-death ordeal. A hunter, John Beiler, is separated from his group in the Alaskan wilderness and then breaks his leg. The writer of the article uses a narrative style that creates a mood of suspense. He provides details about Beiler’s survival in such a way that makes the reader want to continue reading to the end.

Choose a real event or imagine a situation and write a suspenseful article about it. As you write, think about how you would want your audience to react. Select your details carefully in order to create a mood of suspense.
