The Gift of the Magi

In “The Gift of the Magi,” O. Henry uses the traditional exchange of Christmas gifts to explore truths about love and generosity. Although a Christmas tradition drives the plot, Henry’s theme, or main idea about life, is universal. Think of one of your favorite holidays or annual celebrations. Write a short story in which the plot centers on this holiday and its traditions. Be sure that the theme of your story can be understood and appreciated by readers who have different traditions than you.
