The Leader

To determine an author’s purpose for writing a piece, you can try to

  • locate a sentence or passage that states the purpose directly
  • infer the purpose from the tone
  • analyze how the author treats his or her subject

    Write a paragraph about the author’s purpose for writing “The Leader.” Explain how you arrived at your conclusion and support your ideas with examples from the text. You may also refer to the author’s background and his opinions and analysis of society.
