Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

Writing for the Theater

Reread the text and discuss Harold Pinter’s methods for creating his characters. Does he first create a lengthy “back story” for each of his characters? What kinds of details does he provide about his characters’ physical characteristics and personality traits in his stage directions? What does his characters’ dialogue reveal about their history and motives? How does Pinter’s characterization affect the role of the reader? On your own, write a few paragraphs in response to these questions.
