Milton could have Satan describe God as “our powerful Foe,” but he chooses “our grand Foe” instead. Similarly, Satan could speak of “the stewardship of Heaven”; instead he speaks of “the tyranny of Heaven.” How does Milton’s diction help suggest Satan’s contempt for God? Going back to the poem, finds words and phrases that convey Satan’s arrogance and pride. In two or three paragraphs, explain the effects these words and phrases have on the poem or on the reader.
