1.

from Gulliver’s Travels

In Gulliver’s Travels, Swift contrasts the society of eighteenth-century Britain with the fictional societies of Lilliput and Brobdingnag. Through this contrast, Swift makes points about suffering, war, and the political customs of his day. Write your own short first-person narrative in which the narrator travels to an imaginary place inhabited by people unknown to the narrator. Describe the interactions the narrator has with the people he or she meets, and how he or she comes to understand and evaluate the other culture. Explain what the narrator learns about his or her own culture by getting to know the new culture.
