Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

from Mary Chestnut’s Civil War

Mary Chestnut’s journal entries are written from a first-person point of view, which means Mary refers to herself as “I” and everything is presented from the writer’s perspective. A first-person account gives readers an intimate understanding of that person but limits what they learn about other people or events. Choose an incident or event from Mary’s journal and write it as a news article. Write your article from the third-person point of view. Consider how your depiction of the incident might be different from the one presented in the journal.
