1.

The Portrait

Sometimes readers judge literature informally by using personal criteria, such as how the story makes them feel. At other times, readers use more formal criteria, such as evaluating the use of literary elements, to judge literature. Critical judgment helps readers examine literature and its components more deeply. Write a critical judgment about “The Portrait.” Choose the literary criteria you will consider, such as how successfully the elements of character, setting, theme, dialogue, and imagery are developed. Cite evidence from the story to support your opinions.
