Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

The Fly

When the rich man asks the boy where his parents are, the boy answers in a riddle. A riddle is an unfamiliar description of something familiar. The boy says that his father “has gone to cut living trees and plant dead ones” as a way of describing the activity of cutting bamboo and constructing a fence.

For this activity, create a riddle of your own. Begin by writing down an activity. Next, describe this activity in an unfamiliar way. Here’s an example:

Activity:

Yesterday, I played basketball.

Riddle:

Yesterday, I passed a rubber orange through a white net.
