The King of Mazy May

In “The King of Mazy May,” Walt rushes toward Dawson in order to protect the claim of Loren Hall. The author tells us that Loren Hall is an older man traveling by foot into town. Eventually, Walt catches up with Loren Hall and the two of them register his claim.

For this activity, try to rewrite “The King of Mazy May” from the perspective of Loren Hall. Imagine that you are old and traveling to Dawson by foot through the freezing cold. Here’s an example of how your story might begin: “Last week, I found gold! On Saturday, I left for Dawson to register my claim but it was slow going on account of the blinding snow.”

When you are finished, read your story aloud or email it to a partner.
