Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

Primary Lessons

A metaphor is the direct comparison of two seemingly unlike things. “My love is a red rose,” for instance, is a metaphor. (If the words “like” or “as” are used in the comparison, it is not a metaphor.) For this exercise, reread “Primary Lessons” looking for metaphors. Find three and write them below. Beneath your three metaphors, explain why you think the author chose these particular metaphors. Here’s an example:

“My love is a red rose.”
The author chose this metaphor because it expresses something important about love. Roses are pleasant to hold. They are often given as gifts, just like love is a gift.
