Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

The Lark and Her Children, and The Travelers and the Bear

Both fables end with a moral. In "The Lark and Her Children," the moral is, "If you want something done, do it yourself." In "The Travelers and the Bear," the moral is, "Misfortune is the true test of friendship."

Pick a different story from your textbook that you have already read and write a moral for it. You may want to reread the story that you choose, but you should at least take a minute to think about its most important moments. Your moral should capture the lesson that the story tells, and it should not be longer than a sentence. When you are finished, share your moral with the class.
