After Twenty Years

Throughout the story “After Twenty Years,” O. Henry uses descriptive details to create a vivid setting for Bob and Jimmy’s meeting. These details include “chilly gusts of wind,” “a darkened hardware store,” and “a fine, cold drizzle.” How do you think these details affect the story? How would you describe the mood of the story?

Think of a real or imagined setting that you would like to describe. What kind of mood would be appropriate for that setting? What words and images would you use to describe it? Write a paragraph about your setting, using descriptive details to help readers imagine it. Try to choose descriptive details that fit the mood you want to create.
