Miracles

Walt Whitman’s poem “Miracles” names many simple, everyday things in life that give the poem’s speaker pleasure. He calls these simple pleasures miracles. Make your own list of everyday miracles. You might think through a typical day and write down all the small, common moments that give you pleasure. Many of them could be things you overlook or take for granted most days. When you have finished your list, choose the best examples and write a response to “Miracles.” Use your own ideas and words in your poem, but copy Whitman’s style and form.
