Introduction

Reading is an adventure; you can travel the world just by opening a book, a magazine, or a newspaper. Sometimes you have no choice but to read. You need reading skills to follow directions and to get information from road signs, menus, and maps. Whether or not you like to read, reading is one of the most valuable skills you’ll ever learn. So what's in it for you?

In this exercise, you will train to become a professional spy. Like any professional, you will use your reading skills to complete the mission. Your job is to crack the codes in hidden messages to help a brother and sister find their mother.

Each file on this site is a PDF file that you will need to save onto your computer and then open up with Adobe Reader or Acrobat. To download Adobe Reader for free, click here:

After you open the website, click on the "Spy Academy" link about halfway down the page. Under "Log Book," click and download the "Introduction" PDF. After you've read the introduction, familiarize yourself with the links "Log Book How To" and "ASA Warnings." Start your own logbook by downloading and printing the files on the right side of the page. Read each file to learn how to crack different codes and make sense of clues. After you have created your logbook and read about all the different kinds of encryptions, you will be ready to start your Spy X training. Go back to the home page (the link above, under "Destination Title") and click on the "Spy Training" link. Use your logbook to complete the training. When you finish, type your name and the date on the graduation certificate, and print it out for your teacher. Also give your teacher your logbook and any notes you took during training.
