Big Question Web Quest


Introduction

Everyone has bad days. Everyone experiences setbacks. Difficulties test our courage and our strength. Many people refuse to give up, no matter how challenging their difficulties are. Famous characters in literature and history have different methods that keep them from giving up when bad things happen. In this exercise, you will read about two people who accomplished what others thought was impossible. Read how they kept from giving up.

Return to the home page and click on the "Symbols of Hope" link. Read the text, then click on each object in the picture with Jane. Watch the videos that explain why each object is a symbol of hope to Jane Goodall.

Next, click on the link for the interview with Ahmed Kathrada, who was a leader in the South African liberation struggle. Kathrada fought alongside the South African president, Nelson Mandela, to end apartheid in South Africa. To learn about what apartheid is, click here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apartheid). Kathrada was imprisoned by the South African government for treason (being a traitor to the government), and he remained in jail for twenty-six years. In the first paragraph of the interview page, there is a link that says "Ahmed M. Kathrada Collection." Click on the link to read more about Ahmed Kathrada. Next, return to the homepage, and scroll down until you see a list of numbers on the left side of the screen. Click on numbers 1 through 10 and read the text.
