Introduction
In this chapter you have learned about the population patterns of both the United States and Canada. Both how the populations have grown and shifted over time. In this activity you will examine how immigration to both countries has affected both nations.

Lesson Description
Students will use the internet to learn about immigration in the United States and Canada and to study various aspects of the phases of immigration. They will answer five questions and will then design a timeline of major events effecting immigration.

Student Web Activity Answers

  1. In 2005 over 1.1 million people legally immigrated to the United States. From 1991-2001, over 1.8 million people immigrated to Canada.
  2. United States : Asia and North America; Canada : Eastern and Southern Asia
  3. United States : California, Florida, and New York; Student responses may vary but may include the location of the state and the probable opportunity for immigrants to attain employment.
  4. Student responses will vary.
  5. Student responses will vary but might include: Illegal immigration is a much larger problem in the United States than in Canada. Illegal immigrants complete for jobs, education, and government benefits will people who are in the country legally.

Making Inferences: Student responses will vary, depending on the events they chose to include on their timelines.
