Introduction
In this chapter you have learned that the countries of Europe formed the European Union to eliminate trade barriers and to have a unified voice in world affairs. The new, unified Europe is not yet complete, however-new members continue to be added, and the member countries continue to consolidate their economies.

In this activity you will learn more about how the European Union works. You will also examine some of its most important issues.

There has been some discussion over the creation of a United North America. After researching this idea, compose an essay on the topic. What might be similarities and differences of a United North America and the European Union? What obstacles would have to be overcome to form such an organization?
