Input and Output Devices
Personal computer input and output devices used for everyday purposes, such as the keyboard, mouse, microphone, monitor, and printer are just the beginning. There is an entire range of specialized devices that are designed to make business and industry more efficient, enhance entertainment, and provide better quality of life for the physically challenged.

INPUT

  • Bar code readers keep track of prices, files, books, and supplies in large quantities
  • Touch screens allow greater interactivity at grocery stores, voting booths, and ATMs
  • Plotters print very large documents, like architectural blueprints, so contractors can understand the big picture.
  • Robotic arms perform dangerous and delicate tasks so human technicians are not put in harm’s way.

ENTERTAINMENT

  • Digital video cameras are used for live Internet chats.
  • Complex remote controls allow the user to control several media at once (TV, DVD player, radio).
  • Modern joysticks can now serve as output devices, such as vibrations or lights, to make video games more interactive.
  • Projectors can display over much larger areas.

QUALITY OF LIFE

  • Thumb mouse and specialized keyboards allow the physically challenged to input information into computers.
  • Voice recognition software lets handicapped users speak computer input commands.
  • Voice synthesizers allow blind users to receive computer output.
  • Braille printers allow blind users to read computer printouts.
