Section 5.1 The Importance of Relationships

Relationships are connections to others. A healthy relationship has qualities such as mutuality, trust, self-disclosure, rapport, empathy, and shared interests. It also has rewards and costs. Rewards are the satisfaction gained from relating to others. Costs are the energy spent on the relationship. There are danger signals in relationships that can warn you of weaknesses. There are ways to improve relationships.

Section 5.2 Examine Your Roles

A person plays many roles in relationships. Some are given and some are chosen. Roles help people know how to act in different situations. People learn about roles from the family and from role models. Role expectations are ideas that people have about the behavior of someone in a certain role. A stereotype is a harmful kind of role expectation. Role conflict can occur when people have differing views of role expectations.
