Activity Lesson Plans

Introduction
Students have read a first-person account of a fictional director/producer. Before students complete the crossword puzzle, you may wish to have them share the notes they jotted in their Theatre Notebooks regarding Holly Sung's journal.

Lesson Description
Students will practice the vocabulary words for this chapter by completing a crossword puzzle. To get directions, they can click the Instructions button in the lower left corner. If they need a hint, they can click the Word List button. After finishing the puzzle, they can click Check to see how they did.

Instructional Objectives
1. Students will match vocabulary words with their definitions.
2. Students will spell vocabulary words correctly.

  1. strike: to take down the set
  2. dinner theatre: theatre presented to an audience that is dining at tables around the performance space
  3. pacing: the tempo of a performance as it progresses
  4. understudy: someone who learns a role for the purpose of performing in the absence of the actor cast in that role
  5. preblocking: blocking on paper that a director does before blocking rehearsals begin
  6. color-blind casting: casting without regard to race or ethnicity of the characters or actors
  7. cast by type: to cast a show by choosing actors who fit a particular character type
  8. director's notes: comments by the director on the performance of each actor and on the production in general, usually given before or after rehearsals
  9. nontraditional casting: casting that ignores the general conventions of casting by type
