Activity Lesson Plans

Introduction
Students have learned about storytelling techniques, finding stories to tell, and preparing to tell a story from text. In this lesson, they will read an article entitled "Why storytelling at this particular time?" The article discusses the importance of storytelling even in the twenty-first century.

Lesson Description
Students will read a selected article about storytelling today.

Instructional Objectives
1. Students will be able to compare oral and written communication.
2. Students will be able to summarize the main idea of the article.

1. Answers may include that oral storytelling is still important because it reconnects the speaker to the words; it allows individuals to tell stories unique to them; it enables individuals to be trustworthy, authentic, and original; and it is how we learn most things about the world.

2. Answers may include that oral storytelling lets the speaker interact with and connect to the audience; the storyteller gets the opportunity to better understand himself/herself through oral expression; the storyteller can have a more profound effect on the audience through his/her delivery and passion for the story; and the words and voice of a storyteller bring a connection and authenticity to the story that anonymous words on a page do not.

3. Answers may include that the main idea is that storytelling is still an important communication skill and art form even in our present day. Storytelling allows unique connections between people and ideas and allows us to seek and acquire answers about the world in which we live.
