Language Arts OverviewThe writing process involves five stages: A writer begins by exploring ideas and defining the audience and the purpose for the writing (prewriting). Next, the writer turns prewriting notes into sentences and paragraphs (drafting). A draft is not a finished piece of writing. The writer rewrites the draft to improve its clarity and organization (revising) and then edits the writing to correct errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation (editing/proofreading). Finally, the writer can present the piece by publishing it, reading it aloud, or simply giving it to someone else to read (publishing/presenting). Some writers follow the five steps in order; others skip around and repeat steps. No two writers work exactly the same way. Even the same writer may adjust the writing process for each assignment.
