Unit Activity Lesson Plans

Introduction
Students have learned the basics about libraries and how to use the library as a resource for their research. In this lesson, they will learn about what services are available through an online library.

Lesson Description
Students will look at the home page of the New York Public Library and evaluate the services that are available and consider the validity of the site as a resource.

Instructional Objectives

  1. Students will be required to demonstrate their understanding of the resources available at an online library.
  2. Students will evaluate an Internet source’s validity, according to the guidelines provided on page 809 of the student textbook.

Student Web Activity Answers

  1. The services that are available online include searching the catalogs, finding information, putting materials on reserve, and renewing books online.
  2. The online library features sections of special interest to children, teens, and adult learners; community interests like the current ESOL classes available; humanities and social sciences; science, industry, and business; the performing arts; and research in black culture.
  3. The New York Public Library Web site is probably reliable because it is sponsored by the state of New York, the information available is current and regularly updated, there are no errors on the site, and the site is well presented and easy to use.
