Overview

Libraries today offer many services. You can borrow books, research topics, take out videos or DVDs, or access the Internet and more at the library.

Books are usually organized using the Dewey decimal system of classification; however, the Library of Congress system is used by universities and larger libraries. Online catalogs contain the complete listings of the library's materials. You can search the catalog by subject, author, title, or keyword. To make your search for resources more efficient, the library is divided into sections such as the circulation desk, where you apply for a library card or check out or return materials; the reference section, where you'll find items like encyclopedias, dictionaries, and almanacs; and the periodicals section, which contains current copies of magazines and newspapers.

Use periodical databases or the Internet to research non-current magazine and newspaper articles. For much older information, you may need to refer to bound magazines or newspapers stored in the periodical section of the library. Reference works, such as encyclopedias and almanacs, provide general information and statistics. Internet sites often contain the most current news and the latest research advances. Use search engines to link to appropriate sites, but be aware that not all information on the Internet is reliable. Be sure to verify the information on the site when using it as a source for your research.
