Overview

Descriptive details can be organized by order of impression, order of importance, or spatial order. However, organizing details by order of impression helps create a “you are there” feeling. Sensory details that create mood in a piece of writing can attract readers and maintain their interest. A change in mood can indicate a change in feeling toward the subject or a shift in the action. A successful character sketch conveys the values, beliefs, and personality of the subject by describing the person's external appearance and behavior. A clear description of an event includes a logical sequence of linked actions and reactions. An effective description of the mood in a play describes the elements that contribute to the mood and analyzes the effect each element has.
