Chapter Summary

Lesson 1
Pollution affects different parts of the natural environment, such as air, water, and land. Pollution also affects your personal environment. You can reduce pollution by being an environmental health advocate.

Lesson 2
Air pollution can cause poor air quality both indoors and outdoors. You can reduce air pollution by conserving energy, planting and buying trees and other plants, and having your home tested for dangerous gases.

Lesson 3
Some major causes of water pollution are pesticides, fertilizers, livestock farms, and oil spills. To protect the water, dispose of wastes properly and conserve water in your daily activities.

Lesson 4
Improper disposal of wastes, strip mining, logging, and desertification contribute to land pollution. You can help reduce pollution by precycling, recycling, and reusing goods.

Lesson 5
A clean and orderly visual environment supports healthful living and learning. You can contribute to a positive social-emotional environment by using effective communication skills and appropriate humor.
