Converting Fractions to Percents

Carpenters may come across percents with fractional parts, such as 7 3/4%. To convert the fractional part to a percent, divide the numerator of the fraction by its denominator. Replace the fraction with the decimal. Round the number to the nearest one-hundredth.

 Practice Exercise

Convert the fractional part of 8 3/8%.
Step 1 Divide the numerator by the denominator.
3 ÷ 8 = 0.375
Step 2 Replace 3/8 with .375.
8 3/8% = 8.375%
The rounded answer is 8.38%
