Section 1: Legal Issues Facing Start-Ups

Section 8.1 Summary
When a new product or service is developed, it must be safeguarded though intellectual property protections. Depending on the type of asset, it may be protected through patents, copyrights, trademarks, or trade secrets. Before you start your business, you need to understand three categories of laws: permits and licenses, contracts, and laws relating to your location. To be a valid, legal contract, a document must contain four elements: parties who have the legal capacity to enter into a contract, agreement among those parties, consideration, and legality of provisions.
