Activity Lesson Plans

Introduction
Students have learned about prefixes and suffixes borrowed from Greek and Latin that add bigness or smallness to words.

Lesson Description
Students will go to http://www.infoplease.com and read Latin and Greek Word Elements. Then they will find the table Greek Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes on the same Web site and complete an activity about Greek prefixes.

Instructional Objectives

  1. Students will discern and write the definitions of words by using the prefixes' meanings.
  2. Students will construct a new word with a Greek prefix.

Student Web Activity Answers

  1. Students will choose three prefixes, other than micro-, from the chart.
  2. For each prefix chosen, students will list three words that begin with it.
  3. Students will choose one word from each of their three lists and write its definition.
  4. Students will construct a word that doesn't exist in the dictionary with one of their chosen prefixes. Students will use this word in a sentence.
