Career Information

Court Reporter

Some people think court reporting is a glamorous job. Sitting in the front of the courtroom during a high-profile case can be exciting. However, it is a stressful occupation because there is pressure to be accurate and fast. The National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) recommends that court reporters capture 225 words per minute by using their stenotype machines.

Court reporters can parlay their skills into the growing field of closed captioning. By 2006, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will require that all television programs broadcast over the air must be captioned. A closed captioner takes the television script and divides the words into phrases. The captioner then must make sure the words appear at the time the words are spoken.

Explore: Why do you think the FCC would require captioning for all TV programs broadcast over the air? Does this sound like a career field for you? Explain your answer.
