Labor Union President
One of the largest labor unions in the United States is the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. This union represents over 1.4 million workers in virtually every occupation. In 1999, James P. Hoffa was elected president of the Teamsters. His father was president of the same union from 1959 until 1971. Before taking on this responsibility in 1999, Hoffa was a labor lawyer in Detroit for 25 years. Labor unions are usually involved in politics. In 2002, the Teamsters lobbied Congress for the passage of President Bush’s national energy plan, which includes provisions for energy exploration in Alaska.
