Career Information

Canine Enforcement Officer
Search and rescue dogs and police canine units played an important role in the disaster relief efforts after the September 11 attack. The dogs, trained to sniff out signs of life and death, worked 16-hour days searching the wreckage at the World Trade Center. The dogs worked so hard that it was necessary to set up an emergency clinic to serve their medical needs. Many dogs suffered from smoke inhalation, cuts and bruises to their feet, and dehydration. Vets from around the country flew into New York City to provide help. Pharmaceutical companies donated medicine. Many of the police officers that partner with the dogs worried more about the dogs than themselves. The relationship that develops between the officer and the dog is powerful.
