When an instrument is signed by the maker or drawer and given to another person, it is issued. When the person to whom it is issued gives it to a third party, the instrument is transferred. Instruments can be transferred by assignment or negotiation. Assignment is the transfer of your rights under contract to someone else. Negotiation is the transfer of an agreement in such a way that the transferee becomes a holder. An indorsement indicates your intent to transfer ownership to another. As you study this chapter, you will learn how to transfer negotiatable instruments.
