Before fingerprinting, scientists used the Bertillon System to identify criminals. The system required the criminal to be photographed while looking directly at the camera and then in profile. Besides the two photographs, the subject's height was recorded, together with the length of one foot, an arm, and index finger. After scientists discovered that fingerprinting was actually more reliable and easier to track, the Bertillon System was abandoned.
