The Embargo of Cuba

Introduction

The strained relationship between the United States and Cuba dates back to the 1960s. In this activity students will gain an understanding of the history of the U.S. embargo of Cuba, and learn about the effects of the trade embargo.

Lesson Description
Students will go to a Web site about the history of the U.S. embargo of Cuba. They will read the information and answer four questions based on what they have read. They will then apply what they have learned by creating a list of pros and cons for maintaining the embargo and arguing their position on the embargo in a short essay.

Instructional Objectives
The learner will be able to describe the history of the Cuban embargo and provide information on the controversy surrounding the issue.
The learner will write an essay detailing their position on the embargo.

  1. The United States began implementing the embargo when Castro expropriated American property (nationalized U.S.-owned assets) in Cuba.

  3. The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 caused Cuba to lose subsidies, and its economy suffered.


  4. The Cuban Liberty and Democratic Solidarity Act penalizes foreign companies doing business in Cuba by allowing U.S. citizens to sue those companies.


  5. Answers will vary, but students should support their arguments with facts.
