Review Key Concepts
1. Large motor skills use the movement and control of the back, legs, shoulders, and arms. Small motor skills depend on the movement and control of smaller body parts such as hands and fingers.

2. Parallel play is playing alongside other children rather than with them. Cooperative play is playing with other children.

3. Some children have physical impairments, emotional problems, or learning disabilities that make it difficult for them to follow a typical sequence of development.

4. Explain aspects of growth and development and how being aware of those aspects can help one in dealing with children effectively.

5. Heredity refers to the traits a person inherits from parents, grandparents, and other relatives. Environment is what surrounds a person and affects his or her development and behavior.

Section 11.2

Review Key Concepts
1. Answers should include three examples from the text, such as playing peek-a-boo with infants; pretending to be cats or dogs with toddlers; or exploring nature with young children.

2. Seeing things from a child’s perspective will help you recognize hazards that you might not otherwise notice.

3. If eye pupils are different sizes, if the child vomits, or if the child just wants to sleep after an injury, he or she may have a concussion. You should call 911 immediately, and keep the child awake until help arrives.

4. The toy you choose should be clean, unbreakable, free of sharp edges, and too large to swallow. The toys should also be age appropriate.

5. All children need to be fed, clothed properly, and protected. Infants have many physical needs. Toddlers need constant supervision most. Preschoolers need the attention of their caregivers. School-age children need attention and guidance.
