Protein foods contribute a variety of important nutrients to the diet. Protein foods are perishable and should be handled and cooked carefully.

Eggs and dairy products are excellent sources of many vitamins and minerals including B vitamins. They are perishable and should be refrigerated until they are needed. Legumes are protein rich and can be used in vegetarian dishes to replace meat. They are heat sensitive and need to be prepared carefully. Almost all dairy products are perishable and should be stored properly to prevent spoilage.
