Water is a nutrient that is necessary to sustain life. It assists with many body functions and with overall well-being. To be adequately hydrated, teens and adults need 8 to 12 cups of fluids daily. Dehydration poses serious risks. Half of a person's daily fluids should be plain water. To drink more water, gradually increase the amount consumed. Phytochemicals are chemical compounds in plants that offer many health benefits, including protection against diseases. There are carotenoids, flavonoids, and other categories of phytochemicals. Five to nine daily servings of colorful plant foods will provide adequate amounts of phytochemicals.
