Chapter 22: Prepare to Cook

Section 22.1 Meal Preparation

  1. Vary the way foods are prepared or choose foods that provide different colors, sizes, shapes, textures, flavors, and temperatures.
  2. Buy store or generic brands, compare brands, read labels and unit pricing information, use coupons, and check newspapers for sales.
  3. Storing foods properly helps them keep their freshness and flavor.
  4. Your invitation should describe the theme of the party, such as a Hawaiian luau, jungle safari, or costume party. Include information such as the date, time, place, type of attire (clothing) expected, foods that will be served. If appropriate, use illustrations.
  5. Answer depends on the food or meal selected. Write out the recipe and describe how the food might be included in a menu. For example, a Puerto Rican family living in the states may include bacalao, a traditional fish stew, with Thanksgiving dinner so that the children can enjoy a dish from their cultural background.

Section 22.2 Recipe Basics

  1. Knowing how to read and follow recipes.
  2. Any five of: bake, boil, braise, broil, brown, chill, cook, cook by dry heat, cook by moist heat, deep-fat fry, fry, roast, sauté, scald, simmer, steam, stew, stir fry, and preheat.
  3. Trim as little from fruits and vegetable as possible; keep food whole or in large pieces; cook food for right length of time; cook and serve food at the right temperature; and save cooking liquids to use in other foods.
  4. Answer will depend on the recipe chosen. The letter should include detailed instructions, necessary ingredients and utensils, any preparation work, baking time, how many servings it makes, and why the recipe is special.
  5. Recipe cards can reflect any food or dish that has special meaning to you and your family. Recipes should include ingredients and instructions provided by the family member.
