Section 20.1 Physical Activity

  1. You have the energy to do your schoolwork and chores, with enough leftover to have fun too. You are confident about your abilities. You can keep your weight at the right level. You can deal with stress.
  2. Burns calories; helps your heart and lungs work better; tones your muscles and skin; helps you control your appetite; relieves tension.
  3. Explain how fitness helps teens look and feel their best. For example, being fit and physically active can help muscle tone, manage weight, increase energy and the ability to concentrate, and improve self-esteem.
  4. Research may show that a person needs both kinds of exercise. Organized exercise can be fun and motivating, but requires other participants, a place to meet, and sometimes special equipment. Participating in team sports may help people learn to communicate, work with others, and develop relationships, while individual exercise may help people develop self-confidence and build independence.

Section 20.2 Body Weight and Health

  1. A condition in which a person's weight is 20 percent or more above healthy weight.
  2. You gain weight when you consume more calories than your body uses. You lose weight when your body uses more calories than you consume.
  3. Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating.
  4. Talk to a parent, teacher, or counselor.
  5. Identify which eating disorder you think your friend has, what signs or symptoms you see (for example, with anorexia nervosa, that the friend cuts food into small pieces, chews food for longer than is normal, or exercises too much), and what the long-term effects could be. The letter should encourage your friend to seek help.
  6. Answer depends on which eating disorder you choose to research. Include details about how it develops, what contributes to its development, and how it is treated.
